Symbolic relationships • We talked earlier about the similarities between Candy’s relationships with his dog and George’s relationship with Lennie. • What other similarities are there? Candy/Dog Lennie/George • Disabled physically Lennie disabled mentally • Candy realizes the George realizes dog would suffer Lennie will suffer • Candy wishes he George kills his killed his own dog best friend
Curley’s wife • Is eager to talk to Lennie because he will listen • Had dreams of being in the movies • Wanted to get away from her mother, so she married Curley • Is terribly isolated and lonely • Believes Curley is a mean man
Why doesn’t Curley’s wife have a name? • depicts treatment of women in those days- women were possessions of husbands and had no individual identity. • so readers won’t feel badly for her and angry at Lennie when she dies
The Dream • George admits that he never thought the dream would come true • Curley’s wife’s death also means the death of the dream • Candy blames Curley’s wife for the end of the dream • George tells Lennie the story of the dream so it will be the last thing he hears…
“Book ends” • The books begins with a description of the land around the Salinas river and images of Lennie and George • The book ends similarly- as if there are book ends to the meat of the novel • Does this mean that we should have known what was coming? • Could this mean it could happen again- possibly to another set of friends? • Does this mean that George will find peace within himself
