  9. Printing Technologies Direct Thermal Thermal Transfer

  10. Printing Technologies • Thermal Transfer - a ribbon is used. As the ribbon passes between the heated print head and the media, the heat of the print head causes the ribbon to release ink, which bonds to the surface of the media. • Direct Thermal - no ribbon is used. The print head comes into direct contact with specially treated, heat sensitive material. As the print head elements are heated, the stock turns black, and the print becomes part of the label or tag.

  11. Advantages Only One Supply Item Simple Printer Operation Quality Images Cost Efficient Disadvantages Sensitive to Environment Limited Materials Shorter Printhead Life Higher Darkness Setting Direct Thermal

  12. Direct Thermal Lifespan Important Factors: • Direct thermal materials image by reacting to heat from the print head • They also react to other heat sources and light • Images fade and paper discolours (see samples) • Image durability depends on storage after printing/ location of labelled item

  13. Archive Life • Archive lifespan • This refers to the lifespan of the printed image under very specific storage conditions, away from heat and light, away from plastic and plasticizers • Lifespan of image depends on condition of product once archived e.g. if already faded, lifespan will be reduced 10 YEARS- 8000D Receipt 5 YEARS-Z-Perform 100D (60 & 80 Micron) Receipt - Labels (non-tampered)

  14. Pre-printing Inks • Direct thermal labels are in direct contact with the print head • Special inks required to avoid issues with “burning” of ink onto print heads which cause print failure and premature print head wear • Zebra has tested and approved special inks and has systems to ensure the correct combination is used • Sell with confidence against less knowledgeable competitors!

  15. Advantages Durable Image for Indoor/Outdoor Conditions Variety of Labels and Ribbon Formulations Better for fine/small print Longer printhead life Disadvantages Two Supply Items Ribbon Must be Compatible with face stock Higher Total Cost Thermal Transfer

  16. How important are the supplies for our Business? What makes the most money?

  17. Accessories Software Professional Service Maintenance Printers Supplies Supplies make the most Money! Annually 3 times the printers revenue Up to 21 times over the printers life time Typical for midrange and high end printers
