  1. REPUBLIC OF SOUTH SUDAN MINISTRY OF ENVIRONMENT AND FORESTRY Development of the National Biodiversity Database System (NBDS) South Sudan JUSCANZ Meeting Room-520, Palais des Congrès 12th December, 2017-Montreal Canada Host: GBIF Secretariat PAUL LADO DEMETRY D/Director for Biodiversity/CBD Focal Point /BID Team Leader Part Time Lecturer, University of Juba/College of Natural Resources and Environmental Studies

  2. Outline South Sudan Profile and Biodiversity Overview Development of the National Biodiversity Database System (NBDS) Biodiversity Information for Development -BID-GBIF funds in South Sudan NBDS Linkages with SDGs, NBSAP and other National Plans Challenges

  3. 1. South Sudan’s Profile World’s and Africa’s newest country, land locked bordered by 9 countries Independence in 2011 Land area of 644,329 km2 Capital City, Juba Population estimated at about 12 million The South Sudan is divided into 32 states

  4. South Sudan’s Biodiversity at a Glance-Ecosystems Lowland and Montane Forest Sudd Swamps Savannah Woodland Grassland Savannah Wetlands and Floodplain Semi-arid Region These range of ecosystem supports a number of biological diversity

  5. Biodiversity in Protected Areas 19 wildlife Protected Areas, 6 National Parks 13 Game Reserves 13% (87,030 km2 ) of the land surface covered by Protected Areas These harbors a number of Biological Diversity

  6. Biodiversity Outside Protected Areas These wide range of habitats supports a very rich diversity of life outside PA Wildlife migrations that stretch into neighboring Ethiopia There are numerous threats to their existence Most status and trends are unknown Over and under utilisation

  7. 2. Development of National Biodiversity Database System (NBDS) Many of available biodiversity data are unknown or kept by individuals The loss of genetic diversity may be rapid in South Sudan and many species may be declining particularly or even getting extinct without being documented The NBDS aims to contribute to the development, maintenance and update of biodiversity data and information for different users to aid reporting and decision A nationwide assessment of Biodiversity data, data holders and biodiversity data and information Biodiversity cadres trained packaging and disseminating tailored information to have greater impact and ensure decisions are taken in a wise and timely manner.

  8. Expected Deliverables from BID funds in South Sudan South Sudan is participating in the BID-AF2017 project up to 2019 @ 40,000 Euros Currently we had received the first installment of 20% from the BID (8,000 Euro) • Biodiversity Data Mobilisation Plan • Awareness of Biodiversity Database stakeholders • Capacity gap/need identification • ICT equipments procured (Software, Hardware) • Sharing of Biodiversity Data through data sharing protocols • Data & information readily available in different formats

  9. BID-Capacity Enhancement Workshop in South Africa, Dec 2017

  10. Planning for Detail Capacity Gap/Need assessment for the System ICT Equipments Personnel Internet Facility GBIF Node Informatics Infrastructure Need of Biodiversity users Use of BIF integration into research, policy and reporting under CBD and other initiatives

  11. Awareness creation for data generators, holders and users Government Ministries and Agencies Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) African Wildlife Foundation (AWF) United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization (UNFAO) Central Nursery Flora Fauna International (FFI) Rift Valley Institute National Archive Academia Individual Researchers Other Online Opened Source

  12. Strengthening the Network for Biodiversity Database System National Biodiversity Database Wildlife Biodiversity Database Forestry Biodiversity Database Fisheries Biodiversity Database Agriculture Biodiversity Database Individual researchers Academic Institutions

  13. 3. NBDS and GBIF Linkages with SDGs

  14. 4. Challenges Lack of biodiversity data mobilization Plan at the moment Limited incentive and motivation (incentive) for data generators and providers to capture new data Tailoring biodiversity data and information into products that can influence policy and decision-making Inadequate ICT infrastructure and Limited number of overstretched staff in the Department of Biodiversity Most of the biodiversity data are in the National Museums in Sudan and Kenya which need to be mobilized

  15. “Rich Biodiversity resource can neither be conserved nor used to the benefit of humanity until it is studied, made known and documented” Thank You
