Beliefs Beliefs are…fundamental values; ethical code, overriding convictions, inviolable principles that form the bedrock of a community. Why do we start with beliefs? Beliefs are…moral and ethical priorities that move the organization to commit to a mission and guide all of the organization’s behaviors.
Beliefs Are… • Specific, short value statements • Matters of conviction • Universally applicable • Something you would defend • Sources of behavior • Discovered, not created
Beliefs Are not… • Flowery, vague, “bumper stickers” • Statements of fact • Something we should or must believe • Provable • Platitudes • More than 2 concepts woven into one statement
Beliefs • How do you learn something new and difficult? How does your spouse, sibling, neighbor learn best? • Why are schools important? Why do they exist? What would life be like if they didn’t? • What do you value about learning? Education? For what would you be willing to fight? I believe that…
Examples • The classroom teacher is the most important resource for student learning. • Every student is uniquely capable and deserves to learn each day. • Personal relationships and connections are vital to learning. • Learning is a life-long pursuit. • A quality education creates life-long opportunities. • Meaningful work engages students in profound learning. • Free and public education is necessary to sustain a democratic society.
Group Norms • Be honest and optimistic! • Participate (don’t dominate). • Cell phones on vibrate.
Roles • Project Leader • Time Manager • Recorder
