  1. Review of Metric
System and
Measurement (Also known as: Oh, I remember that.)

  2. Units and
Measurements

  3. Math- the language of Physics SI Units – International System  "MKS system" Meter m (distance light travels in 1/(3x10*8 seconds) Mass kg (mass of one liter of water) Time s (the duration of 9,192,631,770 periods of the radiation corresponding to the
transition between the two hyperfine levels of the ground state of the cesium 133
atom)

  4. Metric Prefixes

  5. Metric Prefix Challenge Game http://people.sinclair.edu/nickreeder/Flash/engPrefix.htm

  6. Scientific Notation 5,450,000 could be entered as.... 5.45E+6 or 5.45 x 10^6 remember exactly one whole number to left of decimal,
and negative exponents are small numbers! Write as: 5.45 x 106

  7. It is quite often in physics you will have to convert
to an SI unit before starting your calculations.
Need a refresher in converting metric units?
Remember, to use railroad tracks! NEW UNIT 85km x 1,000m = 85,000m   1km   OLD UNIT

  8. Example: Convert 789m to km: 789m x 1km =0.789km=  1000m 7.89x10-1km Convert 75.00 km/h to m/s:

  9. Accuracy vs. Precision Who is more accurate when measuring a book
that has a true length of 17.0cm? Susan: 17.0cm, 16.0cm, 18.0cm, 15.0cm  Amy: 15.5cm, 15.0cm, 15.2cm, 15.3cm

  10. Who is more precise when measuring the
same 17.0cm book? Susan: 17.0cm, 16.0cm, 18.0cm, 15.0cm Amy: 15.5cm, 15.0cm, 15.2cm, 15.3cm

  11. Precise, Accurate, Both or Neither? Neither

  12. 7 Things Every Physics Graph Can't Live Without Title Y-axis label X-axis label Y-axis units in parenthesis X-axis units in parenthesis *Correctly numbered axes. (No squiggles!) Data! (Sometimes connect with line of best fit) Distance ( ) Time ( )

  13. How would we draw a line of best fit on each? What relationships are shown in each graph?
