Our Aims • Promote and celebrate achievements of teachers and learners of SfL • Enable staff who are teaching or supporting SfL to become more skilled and qualified • Increase the number of staff working and specialising in SfL
Our plans for 2004-5 • Hub of expertise – development groups • One-stop centre • Subsidised programmes at Levels 2,3,4 • Resource bank • Core Curriculum training • Expenses for learners • Mentoring for trainee teachers (L3-4)
Achievements 2003-4 • Level 4: 14 • Level 3 (part): 38 • Core Curriculum: 264 • Level 2 (all or part): 142 • Awareness: 412 • SpLD Cert: 3 • Total: 876
Profile of participants (1) • 74% Female • Ages 25-35 16%, 36-45 32%, 46-55 29%, 55+ 21% • FE 48%, LEA 26%, + TPs, Prisons etc • 40% currently involved in SfL Support • 66% worked 6-14 hrs pw • 69% have worked in SfL less than 1 yr
Profile of Participants (2) • Highest English Language Qualification: Level 2 54%, Level 3 15%, Level 4 17% • Highest Maths Qualification: Level 2 40%, Level 3 21%, Level 4 32% • 35% had degrees • 43% had Teaching Certificates • 4% had no teaching –related qualification
Our Plans for 2004-5 (contd) • Allowances for placements (L2-3) • Bursaries for SpLD & ESOL training • Awareness and Unit 1 training • Recruitment of new tutors and supporters • Supply register • Funds for tailored support for voluntary sector and progression meetings
The Reality of 2004-5 • Cuts in capacity building funds • Cuts in FE/ACL funds • Cuts in Learning Partnership funds But • Concentration on national targets • Commitment to work together
A Priorities • Identifying needs and recruiting learners: Awareness and Unit 1 training • Whole college approach, embedding SfL in other programmes and including national qualifications: Level 2 - 3 training • Workplace basic skills: tailored courses led by best local practioners • Move On Champions & Recruiters
B Priorities • Tutor recruitment • Pilot groups for L4 qualifications • General Core Curriculum training • Time for mentoring, development, moderation, co-ordination …..
