Middle Ages • Time between “ancient” and “modern” times. From about 500 to 1500 C.E.
fuedalism • A hierarchical system of government where leaders at each level provide land and protection in return for loyalty and service
Franks • A Germanic people who settled in Gaul and created a powerful kingdom b/w 500-800 C.E.
Charlemagne • Most powerful Frankish king. Appointed “Holy Roman Emperor” by the pope.
Lord and Vassal Lord – a powerful landowner who provides land to knights in return for their service. Vassal – a person who swears loyalty to a lord, usually a knight.
serf • Peasants. Work on the lord’s land and pay rent in taxes and service. Not slaves, but need permission to leave their land.
manor • A self-sufficient community, protected by a lord, that makes everything it needs to survive.
