Work Background • Masters in Germany “Geo-Ecology” • Studied in England, Augustana College • Ph.D. at SDSM&T, and SDSU • “Atmosphere, Environment and Water Resources” • Dissertation: classifying Land cover of the Black Hills, researching a) different reference data sampling b) different classification algorithms, and c) different satellite types • Publications in these three areas and GIS • Work background: surveying and guest scientist at USGS EROS Data Center • Set up GIS lab at OLC: research on • Mapping historical, and recreational areas • Buffalo grazing impact • Diabetes distribution
Wanted: Research Assistant • Lakota Land project • $14 hour, • Send a short resume to smannel@olc.edu • I will decide within the next 2 weeks.
1. GIS/Remote Sensing Lab • new Tech-Building with GIS/RS lab • 12 Computers • ArcView 8 + extensions and ENVI • Digitizing table • Hand held spectrometer • Plotter • 1Terabyte for geo-database and backup • GIS server • workshops, K-12 outreach Thanks to Stacy Phelps, Mike Fredenberg and Al Schwalm
GIS/RS Services • Provide • work environment, • equipment, • data, • training and user support • Internship possibilities through USGS at the EROS Data Center (e.g. in Boulder, CO), or OST Landuse office • Poster printing with plotter (up to 44’’ for a fee) • Computer lab can be scheduled for classes, meetings or training • Equipment such as GPS’s can be provided
Email • Email is the Number 1 communication! • Make sure Email is valid and you check it at least (!) every other day.
Course set up This is a half internet half lecture class Wednesdays 4.15pm (sharp) to 7pm lecture Short quiz until for 15 minutes. Quizzes are not only to determine your grade but mainly a teaching instrument (usually you can use printouts, and your notes. Still, be prepared!) I’ll take off points for late assignments When late for class, call or email me. (455- 6137) Field trips (open to suggestions)
Grading • Grading is in 90%, 80%, 70% scale • Tests, home assignments and discussion: 70% • Final Project 30%
Final project • Final project consists of 2 parts: • Proposal and actual project (Proposals are due around midterm exams) • Ideas for final projects • Map of an area of your choice • Video of over flight including pictures, and music • Poster explaining an area of Remote Sensing theory or practice • Be creative!

Suggestions • Organization is the key! • Print out ALL the presentations (from Moodle) and organize in 3-ring binders – you‘ll save on a book • print outs are free in all college centers • Paper is easier to study with • Hints • printing PowerPoints: Change: print what <handouts> with 2 slides
