Body Plane Notes April 2, 2012
I. Anatomical Positions • Vocabulary Terms • Dorsal: top side of bilateral symmetry • Ventral: bottom side of bilateral symmetry • Anterior: front of bilateral symmetry • Posterior: back of bilateral symmetry
Vocabulary Terms (cont.) SUPERIOR INFERIOR CRANIAL CAUDAL • Superior: highest or top most part of the body • Inferior: lowest part of the body • Cranial: at the head of the body • Caudal: at the end of the body
Vocabulary Terms (cont.) PROXIMAL DISTAL • Medial: close to the midline of the body • Lateral: towards the side • Proximal: close to the point of attachment • Distal: away from point of attachment
II. Body Planes • Body Planes: fixed lines of reference along which a body with bilateral symmetry (two sides that mirror each other) can be divided • Types of Body Planes • Frontal Plane (AKA Coronal Plane): a vertical plane running from side to side • Divides the body or any of its parts into anterior and posterior portions
Body Planes (cont.) • Sagittal Plane (AKA Lateral Plane): a vertical plane running from front to back • Divides the body or any of its parts into right and left, but not necessarily equal sides
Body Planes (cont.) • Median Plane: same as sagittal plane, but always cuts through the midline of the body • Divides the body or any of its parts into right and left halves
Body Planes (cont.) • Transverse Plane (AKA Axial Plane): a horizontal plane • Divides the body or any of its parts into upper and lower parts
