Starter You have 2 minutes to find out: • What is the fastest type of computer memory? • Where would you normally find it?
Lesson Objectives By the end of the lesson you will be able to: • Identify types of magnetic and solid state storage • Identify uses of backing storage devices • Understand when certain types of storage should be used
88 Miles Per Hour! • You should all be aware by now that there are MANY different types of memory and storage. • How many can you come up with? • You REALLY should know these by now! • You should know: • What each does • What they are used for • Where they are used • Whether they are volatile or not • Whether they are STORAGE or MEMORY • There will ALWAYS be exam questions on this, if you don’t know it, LEARN IT! Cache RAM ROM Flash HDD SSD
Task 1 • Put the following in speed order – fastest first: • Magnetic Tape • RAM • Magnetic Hard Disk • Cache • Solid State Drive • Flash memory
Next… • Using your list and the Internet find out what typically the SIZE of each type of storage is. • Don’t get hung up on the fact there are different answers – just aim for an average for each.
This shows… • Looking at your list, it shouldn’t be too difficult to spot a rule/pattern/trend. • Any ideas?
Rules • As the amount of storage increases, the Read/Write speed of it slows • Generally, as speed increases, so does the volatility. • For example: • Cache and RAM are fast but Volatile • HDD and Tape are slow but Non Volatile
Task 2 – Copy the diagram MEMORY – Volatile, NOT permanent, Stores open, running programs and data Cache Faster, but Volatile RAM Solid State Drives Flash Drives Slower, but NOT Volatile STORAGE – NON VOLATILE Magnetic Hard Drives (Including External HDD’s) Magnetic Storage

Plenary • Which is the fastest type of memory? • Which is the slowest type of storage? • What is the difference between memory and storage? • What would you typically find in memory? • What would you expect to find in storage?
