Getting to Graduation 3 Components required to meet High School Graduation Requirements: • Earn Credits • Pass STAAR EOC Exams • Earn an Endorsement
STAAR END OF COURSE EXAMS (EOC) Students must pass 5 EOC exams • Algebra I • Biology • English I • English II • US History
Course Selection Process Students will receive: • Course Selection Card • Endorsement Sheet • Instructions and assistance from Middle Schools
How Do Students Select an Endorsement? • Guidance from middle school counselors • Students will check an area of endorsement on the course selection card • Reviewed in 9th grade, changes allowed anytime*.
Typical 9th Grade Schedule • English I • Algebra I or Geometry • Biology • Social Studies *World Geography or *World History • Language Other than English • Fine Art • Elective / Athletics / PE
What are the Curriculum Differences Between Regular, Pre-AP and AP Courses? Regular Pre Ap / Pre Ap GT AP / AP GT Covers required curriculum Builds a strong foundation Prepares students for success 20-30 minutes of homework Covers required curriculum Critical thinking, in depth topics Prepares students for AP classes 30 minutes to 1 hour of homework College level courses AP exam Daily critical reading, writing and problem solving 1 to 1 ½ hours of homework
Factors to Consider When Selecting Courses • Am I prepared to put in extra time to study and attend tutoring? • Is this a subject I enjoy? • What other courses am I taking? • What other activities am I involved in? • How much sleep do you need? **Students can take only 2 AP courses before the end of 10th grade.
