Tracker technology for MICE Report of a referee … one year later Gh. Grégoire • Comments on the TPG • Comments on the SciFi • Recommendation • Conclusion RAL, October 28, 2004
About the TPG Full size prototype covering the whole bore of the solenoid The performances and quality are really impressive despite the fact that there was no special tuning (gain equalization, calibration, …) For example • Quality of the hexaboard • U, V, W correlations as a tool for tracking • Tracking capabilities and potential resolution Still a lot of space for improvements (electronics, signal conditioning,…) !
Quality of the hexaboard E. Radicioni
U-V-W correlations E. Radicioni
Tracking U+V vs. W resolution ~40µm E. Radicioni
About the SciFi Fully designed prototype including most construction details: Scintillator (concentration of dopant,…) Construction of the stations (CF supports, optical connectors,…) Measurement of light yield No operational assembly yet Very impressive software and simulation work performed RF background, beam simulation, reconstruction,… Predictions of the various resolutions and 4D emittance « Everything » summarized in the performance table !
% RMS/RMS (with RF) X (mm) 0.81 Y (mm) 0.69 PT (MeV/c) 6.11 PZ (MeV/c) 9.40 X’ (mrad) 4.39 Y’ (mrad) 4.59 t’ (x10-3) 9.23 Performance summary 4D Emittance (with RF) Bias = - 0.0014 s = 6 x 10-2 % But obtained at a very large emittance ! M. Ellis et al
1. I see no point in changing the present SciFi baseline option. But there is a lot of debate about obtaining the specified resolutions on pT and pZ in all conditions of operation and at the equilibrium emittance. Many aspects • Unanimously agreed definition of emittance • Understanding the bias in the predicted transverse emittance • Resolution of the longitudinal emittance Consequences ? « The TPG is still a potential backup/upgrade solution. It remains an important R&D activity of MICE and it must be brought to full completion. » • Predict resolution at equilibrium emittance (Referee’s report 2003) The TPG is certainly a potential backup solution and is probably near to become an upgrade solution. It remains an important R&D activity of MICE and it must be brought to full completion. Recommendations 2.
Conclusion More than ever « 3. Independently of our recommendation, the work presently going on for both options should be completed. It should fully address the questions and issues raised in the reference document and during this meeting. » (Referee’s report 2003)
