To be is generally translated by être However, in set expressions, describing physical and emotional conditions avoir is used: Avoir chaud/froid to be warm/cold Avoir faim/soif to be hungry/thirsty Avoir peur/honte to be afraid/ashamed Avoir tort/raison to be wrong/right Avoir sommeil to be tired V.   11. 2- Formation Irregular verbs: • Other irregular verbs can be grouped, which can make them easier to learn. • Verbs such as partir, voir, croire, craindre, plaire, écrire, lire, rire all have the same endings (-s,-s,-t,-ons,-ez) • -re verbs with a stem change such as prendre and mettre • -ir verbs with -er verb endings such as ouvrir and offrir V.
