10. Scenes from Industrial Theatre Opening Scene We see the exteriors of a mine workers house. We push in on the houses as our screen splits as we see 3 other houses next to our first house. Calming music accompanies our AV image. As we get closer to the houses, the 4 actors take their place on the stage. The AV goes to black. The music continues. On Stage: All four actors are spaced apart. They’re all asleep. WAKING UP SEQUENCE: Each actor rises in their own way. One coughs, one hiccups, one yawns, and one snores. This creates a rhythm for a couple of beats, and then they all wake. Their entire waking up ritual blends into a rhythmic beat, brushing teeth, going to the loo, making breakfast, then hurriedly, they’re all off. Please note, the character that coughs (MZI), does so continually through the morning ritual. He also doesn’t wash properly, or eat any breakfast. The buzz of a taxi tank. Ambient sound of people car driving by, hooters, taxi driver ordering people into taxis. We see the exterior of a taxi rank and we push in and on screen we see our actors walking to the taxi rank. They all greet one another on screen. As they exit frame on the AV, they appear entering on stage. The AV projector fades out. Taxi Scene A physical taxi sequence begins. Our leads climb in and squeeze between the other passengers. The taxi is off. In unison, all the passengers on the taxi react, when the taxi goes through a red light, almost hits a pedestrian, hoots and talks to the other taxis on the road. One by one, our 3 dancers call out for the taxi to stop at their destination. With each call, the taxi skids, and without even stopping, a passenger tumbles out of the taxi. All the other characters are freaked out, but MZI loves every second of it.

(NOTE FOR DIRECTOR: The assistant gets a shovel, the crew member, a pinchbar and the driller, an rock drill machine. These tools should then be used throughout the play, transforming into different props where needed). In addition, they all grab their face masks, ear muffs and hearing protection. The manager holds Mzi back. MATHANDA CHISA: Mzi, I’ve been watching you for weeks now. What’s wrong? MZI: Ja sir, it’s okay, it’s nothing. MATHANDA CHISA You sure? I think you might be ill.(ITEM 2) MZI Ja, I might have the flu sir. MATHANDA CHISA No Mzi, I think it might be TB, or worse, silicosis. MZI Silly what? No boss, you sound silly! MATHANDA CHISA No, it’s a lung disease. Because you haven’t been wearing your PPE’s. If it’s TB, it’s still okay, coz the doctors can cure that, but if it’s silicosis, we’re in trouble, coz there’s no cure for that. Have you been wearing your dust mask? MZI (obviously lying) Er, ja boss, all the time.

Our 5th actor makes an elaborate entrance as the TRADITIONAL HEALER, Luwazi. LUWAZI VUMANIBO! BONGANI/MZI/JOSEPH/ALFRED SIYAVUMA! LUWAZI One of you is ill…there is a fire in your chest… MZI Yes. LUWAZI You are the reason you are ill! BONGANI What the hell does that mean? LUWAZI Quiet!! BONGANI Sorry. LUWAZI Your boss friend has warned you but you have not listened. Your boss friend has told you over and over to protect yourself, but you have disobeyed. Your time is short if you do not abide by the rules. MZI Please help me.

13. Scenes from Industrial Theatre Final Scene We see a repeat of the first scene. All the township houses. This time though ON STAGE: We see our characters on stage. It’s only BONGANI, ALFRED AND JOSPEH. They’re old now, but happy and sing a song that starts out quite somber, but becomes a happy song as they work in the mine. ON AV: MZI is old and alone. He is sickly. The somber song, when it begins, reflects MZI’s demeanor. When the song becomes happy, it should be a contradiction to what MZI is going through. The AV should fade and end with the 3 other actors singing the happy song. Please help me.
