SUMMIT BECHTEL RESERVE For the first time in 32 years, the venue has left the confines of Fort A.P. Hill, Virginia. Travel nearly 280 miles and 4 hours west into the heart of the Appalachian Mountains and you’ll come across the newest BSA high adventure base and permanent home of the National Scout Jamboree, the Summit Bechtel Reserve. Referred to as “The Summit,” it is a 10,000 acre tract of land in the New River Gorge region of West Virginia. With the advent of a new home comes new opportunities and a chance to make history.
ENTER YOU, THE SCOUTS OF DEL-MAR-VA… A little more than 120 of you will have the opportunity to be a part of history. For most scouts, because of where birthdays fall and the Jamboree happening once every four years, the experience can be a once in a lifetime opportunity. You will get the chance to work with scouts and leaders outside of your home troop, to build lasting friendships, and to experience the outdoors as part of the largest scouting event in the country.
SCOUT PARTICIPANT QUALIFICATIONS • Scouts must have a current BSA membership with a Boy Scout troop. • Must have a current BSA membership with a Boy Scout troop or Varsity Scout team. • Must be at least First Class Scouts. • Must be at least 12 years of age by the first day of the jamboree or an 11 year old that has graduated the 6th grade, but has not reached their 18th birthday by the last day of the jamboree. • Be approved by the unit leader and local council. • Participate in a pre-jamboree training experience. • Have filed a Jamboree Personal Health and Medical record with the council jamboree committee before the pre-jamboree training. • Submit all registration fees per the local council's payment schedule.
BE PREPARED! PHYSICAL FITNESS The National Jamboree is a physically demanding experience. Our new home, the Summit, offers a very different environment than Fort A.P. Hill; West Virginia is called “the Mountain State” for a reason. The 2013 National Scout Jamboree is “on foot,” with all participants and staff walking/hiking everywhere; there will not be bus circuits or personal vehicles on site. While a lot of the site is level, there are regular changes in grade as part of everyone’s daily schedule. The Staff Village, for example, is 200 feet higher than Twelve Points, the flag plaza in the Summit Center; staff will make that hike, or one that is similar, at least once and probably twice every day, and participants will be hiking even more. A number of our activities require more stamina and fitness too—think climbing, rappelling, rafting, mountain biking, and skateboarding. It is essential that all participants and staff are prepared for their Summit jamboree experience. Obesity and being overweight have been shown to increase the likelihood of certain diseases and other health problems: hypertension, heart attack, dyslipidemia, and stroke. Anyone who is obese and has multiple risk factors for cardiovascular/cardiopulmonary disease would be at much greater risk of an acute cardiovascular/cardiopulmonary event imposed on them by the environmental stresses of the Summit. Our goal is to prevent any serious health-related event from occurring, and ensuring that all of our participants and staff are “physically strong.” The Centers for Disease Control is the national body that monitors our overall health as a country, and it makes recommendations to help us stay or become healthy. The CDC suggests using a body mass index as a screening tool for obesity; it is easy and only requires knowing your height and weight. The BMI is a governmental calculation based on nationwide statistics that take into account variables that include geography, age, and sex. The simple online calculator to determine your BMI can be found at www.cdc.gov/healthyweight/assessing/bmi/. The CDC defines the BMI Healthy Weight as follows: If your BMI is less than 18.5, it falls within the “underweight” range. If your BMI is 18.5 to 24.9, it falls within the “normal” or Healthy Weight range. If your BMI is 25.0 to 29.9, it falls within the “overweight” range. If your BMI is 30.0 or higher, it falls within the “obese” range. The BMI is just one factor that will be taken into account when considering an individual’s acceptance to the jamboree. The national jamboree is being conducted at a high-adventure site. For that reason, physical standards unique to the jamboree have been set. These standards help highlight some of the challenging terrain at the Summit and types of activities that will take place, all with the goal of keeping participants safe.

This will be the first jamboree at its new permanent home - The Summit, in beautiful West Virginia - and you'll be there for the grand opening. • July 15 - July 24, 2013. It's going to be big. 2013 NATIONAL JAMBOREE PROGRAMS • Curriculum activities will be designed in 3-4 hour EDGE-based increments and enable Scouts to engage on a more intense level with areas that really interest them. • Elective sessions are offered continually, typically in 15-30 minute blocks. • Additional programs: • Jamboree Trek • Jamboree Day of Service • Stadium Shows – Tue 10AM, Sun 8PM, Tue 8:30 PM • JAMBO-Palooza • Daily Ceremonies & Thematic Programs • Jamboree Band • Patch Trading • Movies shown in the Stadium • Technology Experience • Religious Experience
YOUTH PARTICIPANT FEES • The 2013 National Scout Jamboree youth participant fees are as follows: • The payment schedule is as follows: • $100 with initial registrationnon-refundable deposit • $425 due by March 1, 2012 with $25 early bird discount until March 1, 2012 • $425 due by September 1, 2012 with a $25 early bird discount until September 1, 2012 • $450 due by January 15, 2013 with a $25 early bird discount until January 15, 2013
WHAT DO THE FEES COVER? The National fee covers the expense of program materials, food, insurance, the use of a tent, cot, dining shelters, stoves, fuel, and cooking utensils during your adventure at the jamboree, and a “Jambo 13 Kit,” consisting of a duffel bag and two activity shirts for each contingent member. The Council fee covers bus transportation to and from the Jamboree, Jamboree patches, CSPs and troop numerals, some number of trading patches, a Jamboree hat, a water bottle, jamboree backpack, nametag, pre-jamboree training equipment, food and facilities. You will only need to bring a sleeping bag, duffel (provided by the Jamboree), Field (“Class A”) uniforms (only 2 uniforms will be required as these will only be worn for travel and special occasions during the Jamboree), and Activity (“Class B”) uniforms.
CANCELLATION POLICY If you are selected for the jamboree and then find that you cannot attend, you will receive a full refund (less the $100 processing/reservation fee) only if there is an alternate to take your place by March 1, 2013. If there is no alternate, a partial refund will be made upon approval. This includes the fees you have paid to date, less expenses related to contractual arrangements made on your behalf. Requests for refunds must be made in writing and must include the return of any official jamboree patches that have been issued to you.
OUR TROOP • Will primarily serve Scouts from Powder Mill District. • 4 Adult Leaders: Scoutmaster – Matt Bib 2nd ASM – Blair Helmick 1st ASM – Ken Dahl 3rd ASM – TBD • 36 Scouts to include: • 4 Patrols of 8 Scouts each • 1 SPL 1 ASPL • 1 Scribe 1 Quartermaster • Jamboree troop meetings will be held beginning Fall 2012, tentatively at 6PM the 2nd Sunday of each month at Silverside Church. • We will hold one pre-Jamboree shakedown weekend in Spring 2013, most likely at Rodney Scout Reservation. The shakedown is mandatory for participation.
