EKOLOGI SPONS Peran ekologis sponge terhadap terumbu karang • Sponge menyaring bahan organik • Setiap hari, dengan jumlah volume air yang setara dengan 20.000 m2 (40 meter (dalam) dan 500 m (lebar) pada kolom air) dapat disaring oleh populasi sponge yang terdapat di terumbu karang • Sponge berkompetisi memperebutkan ruang dengan organisme bentik lain di terumbu karang seperti koral dan alga • Beberapa genera sponge seperti Cliona sp dan Aka sp menggali substrat berkapur (calcareous substrate) dengan melakukan pengikisan secara kimiawi terhadap lapisan-lapisan CaCO3 (Calcium Carbonate) pada terumbu karang.

EKOLOGI SPONS PERAN TERHADAP BIOTA ASOSIASI • Sponge memiliki racun (toxic), • Jenis moluska (Phyllisdiella pustulosa-Nudibranch), echinodermata, ikan, dan satu spesies penyu laut (Eretmochelys imbricata) yang memanfaatkan sponge sebagai makanan. • Beberapa genera sponge memiliki mikrosimbion hijau (green microsymbiont) dalam jumlah yang banyak yang merupakan sumber bahan organik bagi sponge.
