What makes something Living? • Living things are organized • Living things respond to change • Living things use energy • Living things grow and develop • Living things reproduce
Living things are organized • Living things are organized by cells. • A cell is the smallest unit of life • Some organisms are made of one cell and others are made of many cells
Living things respond to change • Interact with their surrounding. • Stimulus – anything that causes some change in an organism • Response – the reaction to a stimulus • Homeostasis - an organism’s ability to keep proper conditions inside no matter what is going on outside.
Living things use energy • Energy used comes directly or indirectly from the sun. • Plants take in energy from the sun. • We eat plants and other animals to get energy.
Living things grow and develop • Organisms change as they grow. • All changes that take place during life are called development.
Living things reproduce • Reproduce is to make your own kind. • Without reproduction, living things would not exist to replace those who die.
What do Living Things need? • A place to live • Raw materials • Water • Food (Proteins, fats, & sugars)
What are Non Living things? • Examples • Rocks • Clouds • Water • Gases
