LIBRARY HANDBOOK COUNCIL HIGH SCHOOL RITA TILLER LIBRARIAN. HOURS OF OPERATION. The library will be open every day from 8:00 a.m. until 3:45 p.m. unless otherwise notified.

HOURS OF OPERATION • The library will be open every day from 8:00 a.m. until 3:45 p.m. unless otherwise notified. • Students are welcome to use the library at any time during the hours of operation except when classes are being taught in the library or the library is being used as a testing center. • Students can use the library in the morning before school from 8:00 a.m. until 8:30 a.m., or anytime during the day as long as you are given permission from your supervising teacher. • If you are coming during regular scheduled class time, then you will need a pass from your supervising teacher.
CIRCULATION • Books • Students cannot have more than three (3) books checked out at any given time. The only exceptions will be when students are involved in class projects, reports or research papers. During this time students may have more than three (3) books checked out with the librarian’s approval. Students must present verification from the teachers making these assignments. • Books can be checked out for seven (7) days with two (2) renewal periods unless there is a waiting list of others needing the materials or books.
CIRCULATION • Magazines • Current issues of magazines do not circulate. Students can only check out one (1) magazine at a time for a three (3) day period. The only exception is when students are involved in class projects, reports or research papers. Still, magazines can only be checked out for a three (3) day period, but the student will be allowed one (1) renewal period. Again, students must present verification from the teachers making these assignments.
CIRCULATION • Reference Books • Reference books do not circulate.
VERTICAL FILES • Vertical files do not circulate. • Vertical files must be checked out and returned to the circulation desk. • At no time may a student take a vertical file out of the library.
AUDIO-VISUAL EQUIPMENT • Students can only use audio-visual equipment and materials with adult supervision and permission.
OVERDUE MATERIALS • Fines will be charged on all overdue materials at the rate of five (5) cents per day. • Fines will also be charged on damaged books, magazines, and vertical files. • If a student has overdue books or materials, all borrowing privileges will be suspended until the overdue materials are returned.
OVERDUE MATERIALS • After materials are overdue for one (1) week, the student will be notified. • After materials are overdue for two (2) weeks, the student’s parents will be notified. • If overdue materials are not returned at the end of the 4½ weeks, then the homeroom teacher will hold the student’s report card until overdue material is returned and fines are paid. • Overdue materials not returned by the end of the school year will be considered lost and the student will have to pay for them. • Students’ final report cards will be held until materials are either returned or paid for.
RULES FOR THE LIBRARY • Food and drinks are not allowed. • Hats off, please • Two (2) people per table. • Sit diagonally. • Sitting on heating units is not allowed.
DISCIPLINE • Unruly conduct and excessive noise will not be tolerated in the library and will result in students being ejected from the library. • Continual misbehaving will result in loss of library privileges. • Some level of talking is understandable with students working together on assignments, but please be mindful of other library patrons. • Students please take pride in your library and do not abuse the facilities or materials and equipment!
SERVICES OFFERED • Scheduling of library orientation classes for incoming students. • Instructing faculty and students on the use of library equipment. • Maintaining vertical files on a wide range of topics and interests. • Assisting students and faculty in locating needed resources and materials.
NEWSPAPERS • LOCAL PAPERS • Weekly, we receive The Dickenson Star, The Lebanon News and The Virginia Mountaineer in the library. • Daily, we receive The Bristol Herald Courier and The Bluefield Daily Telegraph. • We have for sale The Bristol Herald Courier for twenty-five (25) cents if you want to buy a copy. This is the only newspaper that we get multiple copies.
