What is a call number? • Every book in the library is given a unique call number to serve as an address for locating the book on the shelf. The call number itself is composed of two parts—the Dewey Decimal Classification number and the first three letters of the author’s (or editor’s) last name.
Dewey Decimal System The Dewey system has ten main classes, which are listed below. • 000 Generalities • 100 Philosophy and Psychology • 200 Religion • 300 Social Science • 400 Language • 500 Natural Science and Mathematics • 600 Technology (Applied Sciences) • 700 Arts • 800 Literature • 900 Geography and History
Let’s Catch a Butterfly To find the classification number for butterflies, we need to start with the class for natural sciences, the 500's. Biographies • A biography is a written history about a person's life. To keep all the biographies about the same person shelved together, a cutter number is assigned for the biographee. For example, all the biographies about President Clinton are shelved by the call number 92 Cli
Biography • A book about President George W. Bush would be found in the BIOGRAPHY section and identified by the call number 92 Bus
Collective Biographies • A book which contains the life stories of several people is called a collective biography. • The Call Number for a collective biography is 920. • These books are also found in the biography section of this library.
Fiction • All the fiction books are shelved in one section. • The Call Number is FIC plus the first three letters of the author’s last name.
Non-fiction • The non-fiction books are classified from 001 to 999 using the Dewey Decimal System. • The second line of the Call Number is the first three letters of the author’s last name. • The Call Number for this book is 595.789 Gla
Reference • Reference books are also arranged using the Dewey Decimal Classification System. • The Call Number is preceded by the REF prefix. • REF 616.003 BUN This reference book is about diseases. The editor is Bryan Bunch. Reference books CANNOT be checked out.
Periodicals • Our newest magazines are on the periodical rack by the biography section. • Magazines cannot be taken from the library. • We keep magazines for 5 years. • Old issues of magazines are stored in the periodical room.
Accelerated Reader Books • All AR books are marked with pink book tape on the spine. • The Book Level and Points are written inside the front cover. • You can find the level of an AR book by looking in the AR Quiz program on the computer.
