Evaluation of resources is extremely important. With most books and periodicals, a publisher has reviewed the content prior to publishing the information. On the web, anyone can be an author, editor, or publisher (even you!!!). Therefore, for anything you find on the web, it is your responsibility to evaluate the information before you use what you found in your assignment. Ask yourself whether the book, web site or periodical can meet the following requirements: • It is written by an authority on the topic. • It contains accurate information. • It is relevant to your assignment. • It has a clear purpose (to persuade, inform, sell something etc). • The information it contains has been reviewed prior to publication.
Any book or website that you look at to get information for your report (written paper, powerpoint, or poster) needs to be included in your bibliography or works cited page. At SHS we use MLA format for citations. Some databases have the citation already in MLA format which you can copy & paste. For most books and websites you will have to create the citation yourself. Word 2007 has a template you can use:
You can also get help online to create your citation. Easybib.com This website can help you create citations for the sources you use. You can copy and paste the web address or the ISBN and it will try to find most of the information you need. (You will need to add the missing info – in pink) You can set up a free account and save all your source citations until you are ready to print your bibliography.
Encarta Encyclopedia is available on all computers in the lab or library
Many web resources are available on the LMC website. In the library and lab, Internet Explorer opens to this website. From home you will have to go to the district webpage by typing: www.eagles.k12.mo.us , click on High School and then Library Media Center.
