Mission of the Freshman Transition Program Our mission will be to bring our 9th grade students to a successful level of achievement through a smooth transition, academically challenging instruction, and increased parental involvement.
“The Dream” It is the responsibility of schools to give everyone access to the American dream. First, we must make students believe they can have access. Then we must give them the tools to achieve it.
Goals of the Freshman Transition Program To increase the academic success rate of students being promoted to the 10th grade.
Goals of the Freshman Transition Program To improve all 9th grade students reading and writing skills.
Goals of the Freshman Transition Program To involve parents in all aspects of their child’s transition from middle school to high school.
Goals of the Freshman Transition Program To increase student’s attendance rates and decrease disciplinary infractions in the 9th grade.
The Core Instructional Program Ninth grade students will be required to take English 1, Algebra 1, Integrated Science 9, and World History.
The Core Instructional Program They will also take Health/PE and two electives.
The Core Instructional Program The 4 core courses will be taught by a team of teachers that have a common planning time.
The Core Instructional Program Teachers will have a common planning time every day. Sometimes they will meet with the 9th grade guidance counselor and the Freshman administrator to discuss curriculum and other issues. In particular, teachers are able to focus as a group on an individual student’s progress.
The Core Instructional Program The team teachers are looking at interdisciplinary ways of presenting the curriculum. An integral part of the program will be the teaching of self-discipline, time management, organization, study skills, goal setting, and career exploration.
The Core Instructional Program All 9th graders will be given an agenda to keep track of their assignments and class grades.
Proximity The Freshman Transition classes will be close together. The students will be assigned lockers close to their core classes.
Emphasis on Positive Behavior Emphasize Academic Achievement Every child is capable of academic success at some level. We will provide all students with a strong emphasis on achievement in the classroom. Students are more likely to demonstrate appropriate behavior at school when they are able to successfully focus their energy on learning and are reinforced in doing so.
Emphasis on Positive Behavior Implement a System of Targeted-Early and Targeted Intensive Instruction The freshmen transition team will develop a set of program activities and policies that work to prevent behavior problems and to reinforce positive behaviors, classroom strategies, and additional resources to provide targeted early interventions and supports for at-risk students.
Emphasis on Positive Behavior Clearly Stated Behavioral Consequences Program wide rules will be established and prominently displayed throughout the freshmen area to assure that students, parents, and staff are aware of behavioral expectations at all times. The rules should emphasize appropriate behavior rather than listing inappropriate behaviors.
Emphasis on Positive Behavior Provide Consistent Consequences Consistency in consequences is a critical component in positive student behavior. Students should understand that the same behavioral consequences apply to every student. Every 9th grade teacher should understand the importance of maintaining consistent standards of behavior at all times.
Emphasis on Positive Behavior Listen to Students It is important that students feel that their opinions and concerns are considered when decisions on school policy and behavioral consequences are made. Positive relationships between staff and students can also help to foster ongoing communication.
Emphasis on Positive Behavior Reach Out for Family Support Students are less likely to engage in inappropriate behavior when their families are actively involved in their school lives. Parents are a critical component to making the Freshman Transition Program a success.
Emphasis on Positive Behavior Collect Data to Monitor Intervention Effectiveness All programs, strategies, and interventions should be monitored in order to determine their effectiveness. Interventions that do not show improvements in student outcomes should be modified or replaced.
