  1. Parody Poems

  2. Parody • A literary or artistic work that imitates the characteristic style of an author or a work for comic effect or ridicule. • Turn to a neighbor and tell them about some parodies you know of that are school appropriate.

  3. Line • A single line in a poem – may or may not be the end of a sentence.

  4. Stanza • A group of lines in a poem that belong together, sort of like a paragraph in an essay. Side Note: • Often each stanza has the same number of lines or there is a pattern to how many lines it has.

  5. Rhyme Scheme • The pattern of rhymes used in a poem • Usually the pattern is marked by letters to symbolize lines that rhyme. • What is the rhyme scheme in this stanza? • T’wasthe night before Christmas, when all through the houseNot a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,In hopes that St `Nicholas soon would be there. • AABB Rhyme Scheme

  6. Your task is…. • To create a parody poem. You may use “T’was the Night Before Christmas” or another poem from your own culture. • If you do change poems, please share the original with Mrs. Ginder. • Your parody poem doesn’t have to be funny, but it does need to retain the look, feel, and rhyme scheme of the original poem.

  7. Points • Points: 20 points • 10 for content and 10 or more stanzas • 5 for rhyme scheme adherence • 2 for quality, effort, grammar (especially plurals and possessives). • Your poem can’t simply cut off; it needs to come to satisfying end. • 2 for decoration, illustration, and/or prettiness. • Due on Thursday – will be returned on Friday for you to share with your families over break.
