  2. satire • a literary work that ridicules its subject through the use of techniques such as exaggeration, reversal, incongruity, and/or parody in order to make a comment or criticism about it

  3. exaggeration to enlarge, increase, or represent something beyond normal bounds so that it becomes ridiculous and its faults can be seen

  4. incongruity • to present things that are out of place or are absurd in relation to its surroundings

  5. reversal • to present the opposite of the normal order (e.g., the order of events, hierarchical order)

  6. parody • to imitate the techniques and/or style of some person, place, or thing

  7. hyperbole • deliberately representing something as much more than it really is

  8. understatement • deliberately representing something as much less than it really is

  9. invective • direct denunciation or name-calling

  10. inversion • giving characters or situations opposite roles or changing word order in order to ridicule

  11. irony • implied attitudes that are opposed to those being expressed

  12. sarcasm • caustic and heavy use of apparent praise for actual dispraise

  13. rhetoric • refers to the ability to use language effectively and persuasively
