Choosing a Tool • Name two databases that will help you find business journal articles on consumer behaviour topics: • Business Source Complete • PsycInfo
PsycInfo • Advantages of PsycInfo: • Covers key marketing/consumer journals • Covers many non-business journals and books with “applied psychology” content • Less distraction by non-academic articles • Can focus search on literature reviews (e.g., Scents in the Marketplace)
Cycling a Search How could you cycle a search to find similar items? (Cycle a search = use your first few keyword search results to plan more efficient/effective searches) • E.g. (again): Scents in the Marketplace • Subjects, references, authors, journal/issue, times cited… • Also try searching for the same article in multiple sources to follow their leads: • Business Source • Google Scholar
Scholarly Journals • How can you tell from a Business Source Complete record that an article is “scholarly”? • E.g.: Ambient scent and consumer exploratory behaviour: A causal analysis. • When in doubt about whether a specific journal is “peer-reviewed,” Google it, then read the publisher’s description and scan the Editorial Board. • Can also try looking for “refereed” status in our Ulrich’s database.
Presenting • SFU Library has many books (including e-books) on “business presentations” and “public speaking.” We also have some streaming videos on the topic. Start with our guide to Business Presentations. • The Library also loans digital projectors and has bookable meeting rooms (practice, practice, practice!).
Citing • Many of the databases will produce an APA citation for you, although you should always check them for accuracy. (E.g., Cite link next to this citation.) • SFU has a guide to APA citation, as well as a guide to citing odd Business sources using APA. • Consider RefWorks for citing/organizing your research. • When in doubt, ask a librarian for help!
Bibliographies via RefWorks • Within Business Source Complete (or PsycInfo): Click on the Addto folder link to add the item to your folder.
Bibliographies via RefWorks 1 2 3 Click on the Folder icon at the top of the screen Then on Export, Then save citations directly into RefWorks
Bibliographies via RefWorks • More info on RefWorks? Click on RefWorks on the SFU Library home page for access to guides, tutorials, FAQs, and more.
Getting Help • Ask anyone at the front desk on the main floor of the Library. • Use our Ask a Librarian services (via the Library home page) to chat or email with a librarian. • Contact me: Mark Bodnarmbodnar@sfu.ca Class? Due date? Where have you searched? How have you searched? Found anything close to what you need?
