  1. Advanced User Support Amit Majumdar 8/12/10

  2. Outline • Three categories of AUS • Operational Activities • AUS.ASTA • ASTA examples • AUS.ASP • AUS.ASEOT

  3. Three Categories of AUS • Advanced Support for TeraGrid Applications (AUS.ASTA) • AUS staff work on a particular user’s code (some community codes) • Guided/initiated by the allocations process • Advanced Support for Projects (AUS.ASP) • Project initiated by AUS staff (jointly with users) – impacts many users • Optimally install software, maintain, train users • Advanced Support for EOT (AUS.ASEOT) • Advanced HPC/CI trainings • Participate in workshops, tutorials (TG10, PetaScale workshops, SCXY) • Interaction with other CI programs PlantCI, DataNet etc.

  4. Update on Operational Activities • Bi-weekly telecon among AUS POCs from every RP site • Matching of AUS staff to ASTA projects, discussion about ASP, EOT activities • Program plans, annual reports etc. • Web/Tele-con among AUS technical staff • Biweekly technical tele/web-conference on ASTA and other projects - using readytalk • Since we started (early October, 2008) 43 tele/web-con sessions • Slides and recorded audio archived at: http://teragridforum.org/mediawiki/index.php?title=Technical_presentations

  5. ASTAs • Total ASTAs: 47 ASTAs current including startup and supplemental ASTAs • ASTA reminder news posted before TRAC deadlines • Around 15 ASTA requests/TRAC coming in • Now there is mechanism in POPS to record ASTA “allocation”… (little complicated)

  6. Some Successful ASTA Examples (there are many more) • SCEC SC10 paper Gordon Bell finalists ( ~220 TF/Jaguar) – possible due to significant ASTA effort over years from many ASTA staff from multiple RP sitesYifeng Cui, Amit Chourasia (SDSC) co-authors in SC10 paper • User Kolmakov’s (U. Pitt) serial code’s kernel implemented in CUDA – initial effort ~16X improvement (205ms/iter to 13ms/iter) • AUS staff Carlos Rosales-Fernandez (TACC) • Complex Fluent simulation of nuclear reactor thermal properties • Completed rigorous mesh independence and domain independence tests and validation with known (analytical) results for • Single laminar isothermal round jet, 2d axisymmetric • Continuing for other complex cases – moving to TG machines • AUS staff Anirban Jana (PSC)

  7. Advanced Support Projects • Six projects • Benchmarking Molecular Dynamics codes (SDSC, PSC) • Completed first phase • Continual process as new machines are added • Benchmarking Materials Science codes (PSC, TACC, LONI) • Completed first phase • Continual process as new machines are added • Hybrid Programming model for multi-core (TACC, SDSC, PSC, NICS) jointly with XS-WG – continuing • About to write report and publish from AUS projects page

  8. Advanced Support Projects…cont.. • Investigation/benchmarking of PGAS languages (TACC initially; others will join later) – • MPI, UPC comparison ongoing • Performance, profiling tools (PSC) • TAU tutorial and documentation posted on AUS projects page • Software/database to monitor apps usage on resources (NICS) • Helps US staff in software management

  9. ASP Webpage Doc group has helped in setting up the AUS projects webpage After Liferay migration it is at : https://www.teragrid.org/web/user-support/aus_projects

  10. Advanced Support EOT….some examples • AUS staff continue to teach HPC/CI tutorials at RP sites, TG10, SCXY etc. • AUS staff involved in organizing/participating in PetaScale Workshop series (last one at Austin in March 2010 – Petascale I/O) • Strong participation in TG10 – organizing, teaching, presenting • AUS staff reviews TRAC proposals – both as regular reviewers and as reviewers of smaller proposals (great help according to Kent Milfeld)

  11. Without US there is no AUS
