  1. Tidal Power By: Heather Rose and Amanda Finke

  2. What is it?!? • Renewable energy resource. • Form of hydropower that exploits the movement of water caused by tidal currents.

  3. Where is it found?---high-velocity areas where natural tidal current flows are concentrated. Bosporus Strait Coasts of Canada Strait of Gibraltar Southeast Asia Australia BEST PLACES INCLUDE:

  4. Where is it used? In Europe, tide mills have been used for over a thousand years mainly for grinding grains. Has potential for future electricity generation. France is the only country that uses it on a large scale.

  5. How does it work? • Barrage or dam: • Forces water through turbines, activating a generator. • Gates and turbines along the dam. • When there is a difference in the level of water on opposite sides of the dam, the gates open. • The water flows through the turbines, which turns on the electric generator. ELECTRICITY

  6. …Continued… • Tidal fence: • Look like giant turnstiles. • Reach across channels or straits. • Spin via tidal currents of coastal waters. • Currents run at 5-8 knots (5.6-9 mph) and generate more energy than winds of the same velocity due to the higher density of seawater.

  7. …Continued Again! • Tidal Turbines: • Look like wind turbines. • Underwater in rows called farms. • Run best between 3.6 and 4.9 knots. • 15-meter diameter tidal turbine = 60-meter diameter wind turbine. • Ideal locations are close to shore in depths of 20-30 meters.

  8. Tidal Turbine Diagram

  9. Why is it valuable? • Tides generate a large amount of electricity. • Tides are a continuous source of energy.

  10. How much are we using? • The Rance tidal power plant is the first and only effective station powered by tidal energy. • There are two others located at Bay of Fundy and Kislaya Guba. • Produces 0.012% of the power consumed by France. • Peak rating of 240 MW for its 24 turbines.

  11. Is our present use sustainable? Right now, tides are sustainable because of the Earth’s orbiting path. French engineers have noted that if the use of tidal power on a global level was brought to high enough levels, the Earth would slow its rotation by 24 hours every 2,000 years.

  12. Ecological Impact! • Barrages and fences disturb sea-life migration. • Barrages block the entire waterway. • Fences are more open and may allow more migrations. • Cause silt build-up behind barrages. • Turbines may be the least environmentally damaging.

  13. *Our Opinions* • Wind turbines are pretty cool. • It is the most effective way to get energy from the tides without disturbing the ecosystems. • Due to the expensiveness of each type tidal power plant, we think that extensive planning should be done.

  14. Interesting Facts : ] • It is the only form of energy that comes from the motion of the Earth-Moon System. • Tidal energy has an efficiency of 80% in converting the potential energy of the water into electricity.
