2. Provide Wait Time • The amount of wait time will depend on the difficulty of the question. Observe the number of hands up, or watch their eyes to determine when to ask for a response. The Art of QuestioningThe Question Sequence
3. Student Response • Work the entire room and share the questions. • The response may be Procedural, Correct, or Incorrect. The Art of QuestioningThe Question Sequence
4. Teacher’s Reply • Procedural- rephrase the question • Positive (“Good answer.” etc. ) • Incorrect (Not what I was expecting, but thank you for responding) • Then Rephrase, Redirected The Art of QuestioningThe Question Sequence
Response Styles: • Respond positively and constructively • Accept and develop students’ feelings in order to engender a positive culture. • Praise not criticize • Use active listening (nod, smile, open stance, move closer) • Never answer your own question. Statements that work: • A good response, but not entirely correct. Would you like to expand on that answer? • Partially correct. Can anyone help John? • Let me rephrase the question. • Let me give you a hint. • Talk to your partner for one minute and come up with an answer. • Hands up please if you have the answer. If you do not know the answer, please get up and ask the nearest person to you for their answer. • You have missed the point altogether. Would you repeat the question for us please?
