  2. Territorial Growth • US has major growth; 4 million by 1788. • More agriculture than city dwelling • 1900 – 60,000,000 (million) • How many people are in America today?

The Northwest Territory • NW territory – East of Mississippi North of Ohio River and south of great lakes. • Land was sold to repay national debt. • NW ordinance provided a form of government. • When a territory had 60,000 people then they could create a constitution apply to become a state. • Why would people move to this area?

  4. Continued ExpansionMap page 610 • 1803 – French emperor Napoleon sold the US the Louisiana Purchase. • Doubles the size of the US • Purchases Florida from Spain in 1819. • Texas declares independence and joins US. • War with Mexico leads to Mexican cessation.

  5. Continued ExpansionMap page 610 • 1846 – The US gains the Oregon Country • 1853 – Gadsden Purchase (part of New Mexico and Arizona) • Who is affected most by this westward expansion? The Native Americans.

Slavery and Civil War • The US suffered from Sectionalism, or competition among sections or regions of the country. • North – industrial • South – Agriculture • West – frontier living • Slavery was a large divisive issue. • Abe Lincoln is elected and then SC secedes from the Union. Others follow.

  7. Slavery and Civil War • Fed gov. has responsibility to end rebellion. Civil War 1861-1865. • First modern war (destructive weapons) and “total war”. What is total war. • North wins war. 600,000 people dead. Disease is biggest killer. • Slaves become free (emancipation proclamation) and Congress enacts the 13-15 amendments. (Slave amendments)

  8. Suffrage and Political Growth • Originally, only white male property owners could vote. Property restrictions were soon dropped. • 1848 Lucretia Mott and Elizabeth Cady Stanton held a Women’s Rights Convention at Seneca Falls. Pushed for right to vote and equality. • Given the right to vote in 1920.

  9. Growth in Diversity • A great of growth came from immigration from 1865-1900. Why emmigrate to America?
