ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS • HIV/AIDS affects a “marginal population”. If it had originally affected the white, upperclass population would the current state of affairs be the same? • How does the perception of HIV acquisition affect our treatment of those with the disease? 2003 STATISTICS HIV/AIDS Worldwide • 40 million world wide (11/1000 adults) • In Africa, 8 % of all adults are HIV + • That’s 14,000/day with 50% being female • 2000 children <15 per day are infected • 6000 15-24 year olds are infected daily • 3 million deaths worldwide • 500,000 children under the age of 15 died
2003 STATISTICS HIV/AIDS United States • 950,000 are living with HIV and 25% are unaware of infection • 70% men, 30% women per year with 50% being younger than 25 years old • Of men: 60% infected through homosexual activity, 25% I.V. drug use, 15% heterosexual • Of women: 75% through heterosexual activity, 25% I.V. drug use • 1985-2002 saw a 19% increase in adolescent female HIV infection • AIDS related deaths fell 14% from 1998-2002
