  1. Node Project Proposal • Gender Neutral Bathrooms

  2. cis-gender – referring to an individual who has a match between the gender they were assigned at birth and the roles and behaviors considered by society to be appropriate to their particular sex. • gender expression – How a person represents or expresses one’s gender identity to others, often through behavior, clothing, hairstyles, voice or body characteristics. • gender identity – An individual’s internal sense of being male, female, or something else. Since gender identity is internal, one’s gender identity is not necessarily visible to others.

  3. Transgender – An umbrella term for people whose gender identity, expression or behavior is different from those typically associated with their assigned sex at birth, including but not limited to transsexuals, cross-dressers, androgynous people, genderqueers, and gender non-conforming people. Transgender is a broad term and is good for non-transgender people to use. “Trans” is shorthand for “transgender.” • http://revelandriot.com/resources/lgbtq-and-trans-definitions

  4. Why Gender Neutral?

  5. Transgender people often feel uncomfortable and are subject to harassment and violence when using male- or female-specific campus restrooms. “Gender-neutral” bathrooms—typically single-stall, lockable restrooms available to people of all genders—provide a safe facility for transgender people. These restrooms also help families with children (such as mothers bringing sons, or fathers bringing daughters, to a restroom) and people with disabilities who need the assistance of an attendant of a different gender. Single-stall restrooms also more easily meet the accessibility regulations of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). • http://www.umass.edu/stonewall/uploads/listWidget/8749/bathroom%20FAQ.pdf

  6. How many are close by? • According to Safe2pee.org , the nearest gender neutral bathroom is located in Longview, TX

  7. How to make more GNB: • On Campus: • Locate single stalled bathrooms around campus • Change the signage on the bathrooms • Make a map showing where the nearest women’s, men’s and GNB is, in relation to where you are. • Record the GNB in the directory at Safe2pee.org and the app “Transquat”

  8. How to make more GNB: • Off campus: • Record the GNB already established in Shreveport in the directory at Safe2pee.org, Transquat. • Display this information on a map/pamphlet/flyer • Encourage public buildings (libraries, parks, etc.) to include a GNB in their facility.
