What is Goodpasture’s Syndrome? • Goodpasture's Syndrome is a rare autoimmune disease that affects both the kidneys and the lungs. • The cause is unknown but researchers believe it may have something to do with genetics. Bad Kidneys
How is Goodpasture’s Syndrome an autoimmune disease? • The disease occurs when the body's immune system mistakenly produces antibodies against collagen in the lungs and kidneys. • Collagen is a protein that helps form connective tissue. Symptoms: • The first signs of Goodpasture’s syndrome may include: -Fatigue -Nausea and vomiting -Difficulty breathing -Pale skin • When Goodpasture’s syndrome affects the lungs: - shortness of breath -persistent cough, sometimes with blood. • When Goodpasture’s syndrome affects the kidneys, symptoms may include: -Blood in the urine -Foamy urine -Swelling in the legs -High blood pressure -Burning or difficulty when urinating -Back pain below the ribs -Swelling of the hands and feet
Treatments: • Treatment usually includes oral immunosuppressive drugs. These drugs decrease the immune system's production of Goodpasture syndrome antibodies. • Intravenous corticosteroids may be needed to control bleeding in the lungs. • Treatment of Goodpasture syndrome also usually includes a procedure called plasmapheresis. This helps remove harmful antibodies from the blood.
Other important information about Goodpasture’s Syndrome… • Diagnostic tests: -Urinalysis -Blood test -Chest X-ray -Biopsy • Goodpasture’s syndrome usually affects young men between 20-30 and older than 60. • It more often occurs among whites than among people of other races and ethnicities. • It is almost always fatal if it is not quickly diagnosed and treated.
