  6. A Different Tone (1 Corinthians 16:5-9) I am coming to visit you after I have been to Macedonia, for I am planning to travel through Macedonia. Perhaps I will stay awhile with you, possibly all winter, and then you can send me on my way to my next destination. This time I don’t want to make just a short visit and then go right on. I want to come and stay awhile, if the Lord will let me. In the meantime, I will be staying here at Ephesus until the Festival of Pentecost. There is a wide-open door for a great work here, although many oppose me.

  7. Because “Many Oppose” … • They need some adjustments…

  8. Because “Many Oppose” … • They need some adjustments… (v.16) • “Be on the alert” 1 Peter 5:8 Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls about like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.

  9. Because “Many Oppose” … Therefore, prepare your minds for action, keep sober in spirit, fix your hope completely on the grace to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. . 1 Peter 1:13 • They need some adjustments… (v.16) • “Be on the alert” • “Stand firm!”

  10. Because “Many Oppose” … • They need some adjustments… • “Be on the alert” • “Stand firm!” • “Grow up!” 1 Cor. 13:11 When I was a child, I used to speak as a child, think as a child, reason as a child; when I became a man, I did away with childish things.

  11. Because “Many Oppose” … • They need some adjustments… (v.16) • “Be on the alert” • “Stand firm!” • “Grow up!” • “Be strong!” Ephes. 6:10 “Finally, be strong in the Lord, and in the strength of His might.”

  12. Because “Many Oppose” … • They need some adjustments… • “Be on the alert” • “Stand firm!” • “Grow up!” • “Be strong!” • Let all that you do be done in love. 1 Corinthians 16:14

  13. “It’s a Great Work” – Proof… • Timothy Little “Timmy” …? 1 Timothy 4:12 Don't let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers… 2 Timothy 1:7-8 For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline. So never be ashamed to tell others about our Lord. And don’t be ashamed of me, either… 1 Timothy 5:23 No longer drink water exclusively, but use a little wine for the sake of your stomach and your frequent ailments. 1 Corinthians 16:10-11 (NASB95) Now if Timothy comes, see that he is with you without cause to be afraid, for he is doing the Lord's work, as I also am. So let no one despise him. [Lit, "treat with contempt..."] But send him on his way in peace, so that he may come to me; for I expect him with the brethren. “the young man had some physical and emotional problems (1 Tim. 5:23; 2 Tim. 1:4). He needed all the encouragement he could get.”

  14. “It’s a Great Work” – Proof… • Timothy: A really powerful dude… • Converted during Paul’s 1st MJ Philippians 2:20-22 (NLT) I have no one else like Timothy, who genuinely cares about your welfare. All the others care only for themselves and not for what matters to Jesus Christ. But you know how Timothy has proved himself. Like a son with his father, he has served with me in preaching the Good News. Sent on many crucial missions by Paul: Acts 17:14-15; 18:5; 19:22; 20:4; Rom. 16:21; 1 Cor. 16:10; 2 Cor. 1:19; 1 Thess. 3:2,6… “So let no one despise him” probably refers to a problem with the Corinthians…not Timothy! Timothy was so vital in Paul's ministry, both names are listed as the authors of six of Paul’s letters (2 Cor. 1:1; Phil. 1:1; Col. 1:1; 1 Thess. 1:1; 2 Thess. 1:1; Philem. 1). Holman Bible Dictionary “Treat him like the GIANT he is!”

  15. “It’s a Great Work” – Proof… • Timothy: A really powerful dude… • Converted during Paul’s 1st MJ • Engaged in a most powerful work! • Give him some financial support, too! “He is doing the Lord's work, as I also am.” “Send him on his way in peace, so that he may come to me.”

  16. “It’s a Great Work” – Proof… • Timothy: A really powerful dude… • Apollos: a legendary figure… Now about our brother Apollos—I urged him to visit you with the other believers, but he was not willing to go right now. He will see you later when he has the opportunity.

  17. “It’s a Great Work” – Proof… • Timothy: A really powerful dude… • Apollos: a legendary figure… • Stephanos: brought a household of goods! 1 Corinthians 16:15 Now I urge you, brethren (you know the household of Stephanas, that they were the first fruits of Achaia, and that they have devoted themselves for ministry to the saints), 1 Corinthians 16:16 that you also be in subjection to such men and to everyone who helps in the work and labors Matthew 23:11 (NIV) The greatest among you will be your servant.

  18. “It’s a Great Work” – Proof… • Timothy: A really powerful dude… • Apollos: a legendary figure… • Stephanos: brought a household of goods! • Fortunatus and Achaicus: refreshing! 1 Corinthians 16:17-18 (NASB95) I rejoice over the coming of Stephanas and Fortunatus and Achaicus, because they have supplied what was lacking on your part. For they have refreshed my spirit and yours. Therefore acknowledge such men.

  19. “It’s a Great Work” – Proof… • Timothy: A really powerful dude… • Apollos: a legendary figure… • Stephanos: brought a household of goods! • Fortunatus and Achaicus: refreshing! • Tons of churches! 1 Corinthians 16:19-20 (NLT) The churches here in the province of Asia send greetings in the Lord, as do Aquila and Priscilla and all the others who gather in their home for church meetings. All the brothers and sisters here send greetings to you…

The greeting is in my own hand—Paul. 1 Corinthians 16:21

  23. “It’s a Great Work” – Proof… • The epitome of this great work: 1 Corinthians 16:22-24 (NASB95) If anyone does not love the Lord, he is to be accursed. Maranatha. The grace of the Lord Jesus be with you. My love be with you all in Christ Jesus. Amen. Christianity means a relationship.
