Knockout • Advantage: can be used when there is a very large entry to the competition and is the quickest and easiest way to organize it • Played in rounds; winner goes through to next round • Disadvantage: teams only get one chance. Lose= out of the competition • Options: • Seeded players/teams. Best players/teams spread out evenly in the draw • Preliminary rounds: play against others first for the right to play against the top teams/players • Plate competition: losers go on to play amongst themselves
Ladders • Social competitions that are played in clubs • Not much at stake for winning and losing • Players have names listed on a ladder and they challenge people above them on the ladder to games • If they win they take their place in a higher position • Rules about how high up you can challenge someone • Advantage; easy to set up and administer. Levels standards of play. • Disadvantage; does not encourage new players to join as it takes too long to work up the ladder
Round Robin • Everybody plays against everybody • Disadvantage; can only be done with a small number of entries. Would take too long otherwise • Advantage; gives the top players a chance to play against each other. • Games should be close and of a high standard. Good for spectators • Used for individual/pair events e.g. Tennis
League • Hardest to win as it takes place over a long period of time (disadvantage) • Suited to competitions with a high number of entries. All get a chance to play at least once, sometimes twice (advantage) • Points for winning and drawing. No points for losing. Most points= winner of the league • Promotion and relegation • Runs for entire season • Nearly all professional sport is played on a league basis because: • Fixtures can be arranged and publicized in advance • A certain number of games are guaranteed to be played • Tickets and season tickets can be sold a long time in advance • Most profitable system over a long period of time
Combined • Very common and combine other types of competition • Is often thought to be the fairest way • Main aims of a competition should be to: • Have as many games as possible • Give teams more than one chance to qualify or win • Allow as many teams to play against each other as possible • Allow the best team or player to win • Nearly all international sport starts on a league basis and then goes on to final stages • Teams/players who qualify may then play in leagues again or round robin competitions before the final stages • Knockout stage in the final because; there is more tension and excitement in head-to-head finals, leagues can be won and decided before all of the games are played which de-motivates competitors, more attractive propositions to the media (TV, radio and press)
