Definition of Bullying "A person is bullied when he or she is exposed, repeatedly and over time, to negative actions on the part of one or more other persons, and he or she has difficulty defending himself or herself." This definition includes three important components: • Bullying is aggressive behavior that involve unwanted, negative actions. • Bullying involves a pattern of behavior repeated over time. • Bullying involves an imbalance of power or strength. http://olweus.org/public/bullying.page

Types of Bullying • Verbal bullying including derogatory comments and bad names • Bullying through social exclusion or isolation • Physical bullying such as hitting, kicking, shoving, and spitting • Bullying through lies and false rumors • Having money or other things taken or damaged by students who bully • Being threatened or being forced to do things by students who bully • Racial bullying • Sexual bullying • Cyber bullying (via cell phone or Internet) http://olweus.org/public/bullying.page
Some Disturbing Statistics… • The percent of teenagers who have sent or posted nude or semi-nude pictures or video of themselves: • 20% of teenagers overall • 22% of teen girls • 18% of teen boys • 11% of teen girls ages 13-16 • 39% of all teenagers have sent or posted sexually suggestive • messages. • 48% say they have received such messages. • The National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy
Sexting Turns into Cyberbullying • 44% of both teen girls and teen boys say it is common for • sexually suggestive text messages to get shared with people • other than the intended recipient. • 36% of teen girls and 39 % of teen boys say it is common for • nude or semi-nude photos to get shared with people other than • the intended recipient.
Other Forms of Cyberbullying • Stealing an individual’s name and password to a social • networking site, then using their profile to post rumors, gossip • or other damaging information. • Altering photographs using PhotoShop or other photo editing • software in order to humiliate the individual. • Recording conversations without the individual’s knowledge or • consent, then posting the call online. • Creating confrontational and mean-spirited online polls about the individual and posting them on different web sites. • Using web sites and blogs to post hurtful, embarrassing • information about another individual.
