Fostering Student Success • Resources • 21st Century Challenges • Metaphorically speaking . . .
Fostering Student Success • Resources • 21st Century Challenges • Supporting the [evolving] academic core • Providing access to research materials in support of research endeavors in the humanities, social sciences, sciences, and in transdisciplinary contexts • Supporting the academic core in these fiscal times • Stewardship - - balancing information, reference and research needs - - the needs of students, faculty and staff, against our bottom line • Near-and-long-term implications of collection reductions
Fostering Student Success • Resources • 21st Century Challenges • Escalating user expectations • Ever expanded access • Platform-independent access (mobile, tablets and more) • Everything “e” • Enhanced search and discovery (e-journal packages, bundles+) • Full-text options • Escalating usage
Fostering Student Success • Resources • 21st Century Challenges • Serials landscape and pricing • eJournals, e-journal packages , open access • Pricing • Average prices for science, technology and medical serials remain the highest • The “Big Deal” e-journal package continues to dominate academic library purchasing • The 2014 6% average price increase is expected to remain stagnant for 2015, hovering in the 6% to 7% range. That 6% seems to be a level of inflation that is neither too hot for libraries nor too cold for publishers, so for the time being, 5.5% is a safe bet. However it is only April, and a lot could change before 2015 pricing is finalized. (Periodicals Price Survey 2014, http://lj.libraryjournal.com/2014/04/publishing/steps-down-the-evolutionary-road-periodicals-price-survey-2014/)
Fostering Student Success • Resources • 21st Century Challenges • Journal marketplace – 2015 forecast • “The 2015 serials marketplace will still see steady increases in prices, while the development of scholarly communications and libraries will continue to be in flux. Budget compression, price inflation, and questions of value will collide with OA trends, government mandates, new evaluation tools such as altmetrics, and the increased distribution of information offered by research platforms and social networks.” (Periodicals Price Survey 2014, http://lj.libraryjournal.com/2014/04/publishing/steps-down-the-evolutionary-road-periodicals-price-survey-2014/)
Fostering Student Success • Resources • 21st Century Challenges • Finding the resources to support collections • Periodicals Price Survey 2014 (~21 years of data) http://lj.libraryjournal.com/2014/04/publishing/steps-down-the-evolutionary-road-periodicals-price-survey-2014/ • Trends • Serial prices have increased significantly and represent the largest inflationary factor for library budgets • Steady increase in the cost of journal literature • Ongoing inflation • Diminished library budgets • Outdated materials’ budget models
Fostering Student Success • Resources • Pacing the Future - Randall Library Responds • Implications for leadership and stewardship • Rethinking the Materials Budget • Leveraging the Materials Budget • Interlibrary Loan • The power of 17 • NC LIVE • Data-driven collection development • Collection reduction • Measuring the value of journals • Creative resource recovery • One-time funds • Grants
