Sholom Aleichem (1859-1916) Sholom Aleichem is a Pseudonym of Solomon Rabinowitz. He was recognized as a best Jewish writer who ever lived in Russia and wrote in Yiddish. He is famous for his sad and ironical novels and stories that describe the life of simple Russian Jews in small towns. Sholom Aleichem was born in Pereyaslav, near Kiev, Ukraine. Worked as a teacher and rabbi. In 1905 fled Jewish persecution in Russia and in 1914 settled in New York City. Most important works include "Stempenyu“, "Inside Kasrilovka", "The Old Country", "Tevye's Daughters", "Adventures of Mottel, “The Cantor's Son". A well-known musical comedy "Fiddler on the Roof“.
About our school The Sholom Aleichem secondary school was established on October in 1989. It is one national Jewish school in Lithuania. Now in this school are learning 273 students, 7-19 years old. In 2002 the school finished first seniors. It was the first edition for 60 years. Most of them are jewish, but there are also polish, lithuanian and russian students. The main subjects in school are teaching in Lithuanian, but there is also included Hebrew, Jewish history, Jewish traditions and religion. Also there are reinforce English lessons. The school has a law to work under Jewish calendar.
ORT and JDC The school is supported by Israel Board of Education: year by year in the school works three teachers from Israel, who teach all Jewish subjects. The country of Israel for the school give methodical and financial help. Also school actively collaborate with ORT, Joint Distribution Committee, Swedish Jewish community. Many works doing with Lithuanian Jewish organization.
The ensemble “Simcha” The ensemble “Simcha” was discovered in 1995. It is the singers and dancers group. In this ensemble is include about 40 Sholom Aleichem school students 1-12 forms. The songs is on Yiddish, Hebrew, English and Lithuanian. Dancing is traditional Jewish and Israel locality. The head of “Simcha” is Neringa Štikelienė (singers) and Teresa Božerodskaja (dancers). Our ensemble had performed in lot of countries, for example: England, Russia, Israel, Poland, etc.
