What Makes Someone A Liberal? • In general, liberals support a larger scope of government and more government involvement • Also favor policies that promote equality (Affirmative Action) • Beliefs of Liberals: • Military spending should decrease • Abortion - pro-choice • Favor Affirmative Action • Advocate higher taxes for wealthy • Increased spending on social programs
What Makes Someone A Conservative? • In general, conservatives support a smaller scope of government and less government involvement • Also favor policies that promote free enterprise • Beliefs of Conservatives: • Military spending should be a top priority • Abortion - pro-life • Oppose Affirmative Action • Advocate lower taxes • Decreased spending on social programs
A Closer Look At Liberals And Conservatives • More Americans identify with conservative than liberal • Those under 30 identify more with liberal than conservative • African Americans identify more as liberal than conservative • Government laws of the 1960s increased voter participation for minorities - Voting Rights Act of 1965 • Women tend to be more liberal than men • Religion and Ideology: • The specific religion is less important in determining ideology, but rather, how religious an individual is • Born-Again Christians tend to be conservative, those with little/no religious affiliation tend to be liberal
