Counseling Techniques • Tape Recorder • Helps clarify Biblical thinking when experiencing problem emotions due to problem thinking. Example: Biblical statements of truth on index or business cards. • Compass Sketching • Provides a mental picture of how a person’s compass is functioning and where they may be stuck in particular situations or relationships. Montgomery (2006).
Counseling Techniques • Counselor Self-Disclosure • Powerful • Can easily be abused; Focus on person in need • Sharing an aspect of one’s own life that has been dealt with successfully in an effort to give hope • Congratulatory Affirmation • Affirming even the slightest progress in an effort to strengthen, give hope, and encourage future effort Montgomery (2006).
Counseling Techniques • Lean Against the Wall • May provide a physical symbolization for trusting the Lord when a person is having difficulty “letting go and letting God” • Only used when no risk of personal injury exists • Metaphor Construction • Uses implied comparison to make concepts real and give them lasting power Montgomery (2006).
Counseling Techniques • Conditional Alignment • Models the Jesus’ work (1 John 2:1) • Includes coming alongside to listen and respond • Maintains objectivity and ability to disagree • Socratic Questioning • Maintains rapport and relationship • Uses questions and statements to encourage personal awareness Montgomery (2006).
