  3. Context of change to AACR2 • AACR is a work-in-progress • Shift from incremental changes to more fundamental changes • Annual cycle of amendments starting in 2001 OLA SuperConference 2004

  4. Recent amendment packages • 2002 – huge: new chapters, fundamental issues addressed • 2003 – small: incremental changes, specific issues, new index • 2001 – in-between: one new chapter, other incremental changes • 2004 – probably also fairly small OLA SuperConference 2004

Results so far • 2001: term of address at end of the name (rules 22.15B1, 22.19B1) • 2002: 1.4D4 deleted (no longer use “the Institute” “the Museum” in 260$b even if the name of the publisher appears in 245$c) • 2003: 21.30J1 revised to always make a title added entry from title proper OLA SuperConference 2004

  12. Logical Model issues still pending • How should Part I be organized? • Inconsistencies in choice of main entry for different types of works • Rule of 3 in chapter 21 • and more OLA SuperConference 2004

  13. Seriality • Major accomplishment • Definition of Integrating resources and Continuing resources in 2002 amendments • Complete revision of chapter 12, changes in chapters 21 and 1 • Harmonization with ISBD(CR) and ISSN OLA SuperConference 2004

  14. Seriality principles • Recognition of change over time • Basis of description • Major/minor changes and impact on what is a new work • Note to monograph cataloguers: revised ch.12 also applies to series OLA SuperConference 2004

Seriality issues still pending • Refinements to rules for serials and integrating resources including their application to series • Description of multipart monographs, particularly those issued over time • Clear definition of basis of description by mode of issuance • Some of these probably in 2004 amendments OLA SuperConference 2004

Rule 0.24 and Content vs Carrier • Revised in 2001: • “It is important to bring out all aspects of the item being catalogued, including its content, its carrier, its type of publication, its bibliographic relationships, and whether it is published or unpublished. In any given area of description, all relevant aspects should be described.” OLA SuperConference 2004

  17. Much still to come • 2001 rule 0.24 considered only a first step • How does FRBR relate to the multiple versions issue? • JSC created the Format Variation Working Group (FVWG) in 2001 OLA SuperConference 2004

Format Variation Working Group • Interim Report (Oct. 8, 2001) on JSC web • Reaffirmed the manifestation as the basis of the bibliographic record • Describe the manifestation, collocate/index to provide access to the expression and work • Current task: revise ch.25 to provide for headings for works and expressions • Also, investigate GMD in an FRBR context OLA SuperConference 2004

Incorporating FRBR terminology • JSC separated this task from the FVWG • To align terminology of AACR with FRBR, particularly work/expression/manifestation/item • Propose Glossary definitions of FRBR terms • Identify FRBR concepts already in the rules • Not to actually change the intent of any rules!   20. Consistency Across Part I • A CC:DA Task Force • Conservative mandate: promote consistency, remove needless inconsistencies, move general rules to chapter 1 • Open question – Will consistency be a step along a path to a new organization for Part I? OLA SuperConference 2004

  22. Electronic Resources • 2001 revision of chapter 9 did not address issues relating to areas 3 and 5 • Expect removal of area 3 (Type and extent of resource) from chapter 9 in 2004 • CC:DA/BL task force to “reconceptualize” ch. 9 • Linked to work on Part I as a whole OLA SuperConference 2004

  23. Authority Control as Part III? • Desire to address authority records explicitly • More a reorganization of ch.22-26 than actual new rules • Part II would consist only of chapter 21: Choice of access points • Will consider the FRANAR report OLA SuperConference 2004

  24. AACR3 at last? • JSC announcement Sept. 30, 2003: • “As part of its strategic plan JSC is working towards a new edition of AACR.” • Not before 2006, likely later. • April 2004 JSC meeting will focus on planning this new edition. OLA SuperConference 2004
