Establishing Timothy’s Authority Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus according to the commandmentof God our Savior, and of Christ Jesus, who is our hope; to Timothy, my true child in the faith: Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. (v1-2) As I urged you upon my departure for Macedonia, remain on at Ephesus, in order that you may instruct certain men not to teach strange doctrines… (v3) This command I entrust to you, Timothy, my son… (v18) No thanksgiving!
Effects of the Heresy “But the goal of our instruction is love from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith.” (v5)
The Untrustworthy Made Trustworthy “I thank Christ Jesus our Lord because he counted me, who was untrustworthy, as trustworthy! Through his strength, he has put me to work!”
Why was Paul Shown Mercy? • v13-14 • And yet I was shown mercy, because: • I acted ignorantly in unbelief and… • the grace of our Lord was more than abundant… • v16 • And yet for this reason I found mercy: • in order that in me as the foremost, Jesus Christ might demonstrate His perfect patience, as an example for those who would believe in Him for eternal life.
Paul’s progressive self-assessment “For I am the least of the apostles, who am not fit to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. But by the grace of God I am what I am, and His grace toward me did not prove vain; but I laboured even more than all of them, yet not I, but the grace of God with me.” (1 Cor. 15:9-10) “To me, the very least of all saints, this grace was given, to preach to the Gentiles the unfathomable riches of Christ,” (Eph. 3:8) “It is a trustworthy statement, deserving full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, among whom I am foremost of all.” (1 Tim. 1:15)
