  9. "The great vital and conservative element in our system is the belief of our people in the pure doctrine and the divine truths of the Gospel of Jesus Christ."

  12. my duties dictate a faithful and zealous pursuit of the interests of my constituents, and in proportion as they are persuaded of my fidelity to those duties, the discharge of them becomes more and more pleasing.Believing with you that religion is a matter which lies solely between Man and his God, that he owes account to none other for his faith or his worship,

  13. that the legitimate powers of government reach actions only, and not opinions, icontemplate with sovereign reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their legislature should "make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof," thus building a wall of separation between Church and State.

  14. Adhering to this expression of the supreme will of the nation in behalf of the rights of conscience, i shall see with sincere satisfaction the progress of those sentiments which tend to restore to man all his natural rights, convinced he has no natural right in opposition to his social duties.

  15. ireciprocate your kind prayers for the protection and blessing of the common father and creator of man, and tender you for yourselves and your religious association, assurances of my high respect and esteem.Th JeffersonJan. 1. 1802.

  16. Government has a divine assignment separate from the mission of the church.

  17. Give to Caesar what is Caesar’s. • When government reaches beyond its divine boundaries by promoting or restricting faith the spiritual vitality of the people suffers. • God did not sanction the government to be the guardian of the soul.

  18. The Church has the divine assignment to be the presence and voice of God in society.

  19. Give to God what is God’s • Freedom of religion should not mean the same as freedom “from” religion. • God expects His people to be the light and the salt of the earth. • The Church gives God all He so rightfully deserves—their very lives.
