  2. What do we teach in Science? • List what concepts you have covered in your high school sciences

  3. Standards • The map displays which states have adopted the common core standards? List them in your note book? • What are the advantages/disadvantages? Create a Venn-diagram as a group.

TEKS (Texas Essential Knowledge & Skills) • State Standards for Science are aligned with National Standards, which have traditionally been determined by teacher led organizations like National Science Teachers Association (http://www.nsta.org) and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (http://www.nctm.org).

Comparing Grade Levels Grades K-4 • Ask a question about objects, organisms, and events in the environment. • Plan and conduct a simple experiment. • Employ simple equipment and tools to gather data and extend the senses. • Use data to construct a reasonable explanation. • Communicate investigations and explanations. — From: Inquiry and the National Science Standards, 2000 Grades 5-8 • Identify questions that can be answered through scientific investigation. • Design and conduct a scientific investigation. • Use appropriate tools and techniques to gather, analyze, and interpret data. • Develop descriptions, explanations, predictions, and models using evidence. • Think critically and logically to make the relationships between evidence and explanations. • Recognize and analyze alternative explanations and predictions. • Communicate scientific procedures and explanations. • Use mathematics in all aspects of scientific inquiry.

  6. So what have we learned ? • Create a foldable to share with the class about what is curriculum and how standards are related. Be ready to share web resources with the class.
