  1. Story Unit 5 Notes

  2. What is the Classical Paradigm? • Most popular type of narrative structure • Based on a conflict between a protagonist who initiates the action and an antagonist who resists it • Most films begin with an implied dramatic question • Viewers want to know how the protagonist will get what he/she wants in the face of opposition • Builds to a dramatic conflict • Resolution occurs

  3. Realistic Narratives • Prefer loose discursive plots with no clearly defined beginning, middle or end • No clear cut conflict • Story presented as a “slice of life” • Move slowly • Often center on a right of passage • Often borrows from the cycles of nature

  4. Formalistic Narratives • Artificial • Time is scrambled and rearranged to hammer home a thematic point • Plots design is obvious • Author’s personality is part of the show • Interrupted by lyrical interludes

  5. Narrative Types • Documentary • Avant Garde • Fiction Movies

  6. Documentary • Deal with facts, real people, places and events • Reports on the world • Minimal interference with reality • 60 Minutes

  7. Avant-Garde • Concerned with conveying inner impulses • Not written out in advance (sometimes) • Like a lyric poem • Fantasia

  8. Fiction Movies • Like novels and plays • Horizontal in development • Linear structures • Love stories • Sleepless in Seattle, The Notebook

  9. Genre Films • Specific type of movie • A war picture, gangster film, western • Distinguished by a characteristic set of conventions in style, subject matter and values • Usually directed at a specific audience • Saving Private Ryan

  10. Four Classifications • Primitive • Classical • Revisionist • Parodic

  11. Primitive • Naïve phase • Powerful emotionally • Bowling for Columbine

  12. Classical • Embodies ideals of balance, richness and poise • Genre’s views shared by audience • Titanic

  13. Revisionist • More symbolic • Less certain in values • Appeals more to intellect • Questions popular beliefs • Amelie • Crash

  14. Parodic • Mockery of conventions • Comic • Cliches • Scary Movie

  15. OVP • Fourth Quarter OVP is due Friday, November 20th
