What is the Classical Paradigm? • Most popular type of narrative structure • Based on a conflict between a protagonist who initiates the action and an antagonist who resists it • Most films begin with an implied dramatic question • Viewers want to know how the protagonist will get what he/she wants in the face of opposition • Builds to a dramatic conflict • Resolution occurs
Realistic Narratives • Prefer loose discursive plots with no clearly defined beginning, middle or end • No clear cut conflict • Story presented as a “slice of life” • Move slowly • Often center on a right of passage • Often borrows from the cycles of nature
Formalistic Narratives • Artificial • Time is scrambled and rearranged to hammer home a thematic point • Plots design is obvious • Author’s personality is part of the show • Interrupted by lyrical interludes

Documentary • Deal with facts, real people, places and events • Reports on the world • Minimal interference with reality • 60 Minutes
