Kata 型 形 Is a Japanese word describing detailed patterns of movements practiced either solo or in pairs. Kata are executed as a specified series of a variety of moves, with stepping and turning, while attempting to maintain perfect form.
Kumite 組手 It means sparring, and is one of the three main sections of karate training, along with kata and kihon. Kumite is the part of karate in which you train against an adversary, using the techniques learned from the kihon and kata.
Shotokan-ryu Was founded in 1931 by the late Grand Master Hironori Ohtsuka (1892-1982). Sensei Ohtsuka was already an accomplished master of JuJitsu, Shindo Yoshin Ryu, when Master Gichin Funakoshi introduced karate in Tokyo, Japan. Master Ohtsuka became interested in karate in 1922.
