What is streaming? • Streaming is a technique for transferring a digital media file, usually an audio or video file, to a computer over the Internet in a continuous flow so that a user can begin using it before the entire file has been received • The file doesn’t actually remain on the user’s computer • think of listening to radio over the web
Advantages of streaming • Lets you watch/listen to digital media almost instantly • this can be video as well as just audio • No downloading time • Much faster to use • Accessible • Large file sizes can be accommodated • i.e. entire lectures at full screen • Interactivity • i.e. user can fast forward, rewind, replay as required http://streaming.rdg.ac.uk/ramgen/test/rakemaker.mp4
