Smoke Alarms • Most Fire fatalities occur in homes mainly while people are sleeping. Fire is quiet and fast, if you’re asleep you cant smell smoke • Sound is the best way to wake up a person from a deep sleep. • Smoke particles break a circuit in the smoke detector which triggers a loud warning signal and keeps sounding until the smoke clears
Smoke Alarms • Installed in every bedroom plus the lounge and hallways • Don't put them in the kitchen, garage or bathrooms unless they are specially designed smoke alarms for those areas. Heat detectors are available for the kitchen.
Smoke AlarmsMaintenance • Clean with Vacuum Cleaner once a month • Test pushing in test button • Change batteries every year (Daylight Savings, New Years, birthday) • Short ‘beep’ indicates battery going flat • Change smoke alarms every 10 years
Fire Extinguishers:When to operate • To be used when everyone has evacuated and accounted for at a safe meeting place • Fire Service has been called • Safe? considering size and location of fire • Access to fire is unrestricted and a safe retreat is possible at all times • Don’t put yourself or others at risk, LIFE is more important than property
Fire ExtinguishersInstallation • C02 (Electrical) and Dry Powder (Oil fat) • Should be wall mounted above the normal reach of children, and in or near the kitchen • If it is in the kitchen, don't put it to close to the stove or cooking surfaces. • Ideally have another extinguisher in the garage and one in the car.
Fire Extinguishers Operation • P ull the pin • T est • A im • S queeze • S weep Operate from about 2-3 metres away
