  7. Twitter Use Examples * • Use in business - Twitter is increasingly being used as a business promotional tool. Twitter expressly encourages this through ‘Twitter 101’, a web-based tutorial aimed at business users. One of the most famous business Twitter users is Dell, who claimed that $9m of their sales for 2009 came directly through Twitter and Facebook combined. • Use in Space Mission news - In February 2009, NASA won a Shorty Award for its near real-time status updates in 2008 of the unmanned Mars Phoenix Lander mission. • Use in Emergencies – Using Twitter during the fires in California in October 2007 kept their followers (who were often friends and neighbors) informed of their whereabouts and of the location of various fires minute by minute. The American Red Cross started using Twitterto exchange minute-to-minute information about local disasters including statistics and directions. • Use in Education – The University of Vienna, Austria, used Twitter where every student had to send a tweet after each course unit with feedback to the teacher. • Use in protest and politics – In June 2009, following allegations of fraud in the Iranian presidential election, protesters used Twitter as a rallying tool and as a method of communication with the outside world after the government blocked several other modes of communication. • Use in campaigning - used by candidates in the 2008 U.S. presidential campaign throughout the race. • Use in legal proceedings – Agents of the FBI arrested Daniel Knight Hayden who was accused of sending tweets threatening violence in connection with his plan to attend a Tea Party protest in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. * Source: Wikipedia

What is Facebook? * • Facebook (created in 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg, Eduardo Saverin, Dustin Moskovitz, and Chris Hughes) is a social networking website. • Users can create profiles with photos, lists of personal interests, contact information and other personal information. • Communicating with friends and other users can be done through private or public messages or a chat feature, insert videos, IM people to people, send messages, play games. • Users can also create and join interest and fan groups, some of which are maintained by organizations as a means of advertising. • Additionally, users can join networks organized by workplace, school, or college. • To combat privacy concerns, Facebook enables users to choose their own privacy settings and choose who can see what parts of their profile. A January 2009 Compete.com study ranked Facebook as the most used social network by worldwide monthly active users currently over 400M users worldwide, followed by MySpace . * Source: Wikipedia

  9. What is LinkedIn? * • Based on the concept of “six degrees of separation” (also referred to as the "Human Web“ or “Small World Phenomenon). • Widely attributed to American Psychologist Stanley Milgram’s Psychology Today article • Refers to the idea that, if a person is one step away from each person they know and two steps away from each person who is known by one of the people they know, then everyone is at most six steps away from any other person on Earth. * Source: Wikipedia
