Capitalization Review • With a partner, get a sticky note and an sentence/paragraph assignment from “Fish Cheeks” • Write down each capital word you find in context (with the one or two words that come before and after it) on a sticky note. One word/phrase per sticky note. • Now, look at each one and be able to try to explain what that word is doing and why it might be important enough to be capitalized. • Raise your hand if you’d like to go first! Why is the word you have important enough to be capitalized? What do you notice about how it acts in the sentence? • Who else has one that works that way? Let’s stick them all on the board together with a title (official or homemade). • Next – another kind of capitalized word?
Capitalization Review, Part 2 In the paragraphs below, write down the words that should be capitalized (and capitalize them!) and a quick description of WHY – remember the rules we came up with yesterday. i fell in love with the minister’s son in the winter i turned fourteen. he was not chinese, but as white as mary in the manger. for christmasi prayed for this blond-haired boy, robert, and a slim new american nose. after everyone had gone, my mother said to me, “you want to be the same as american girls on the outside.” Now, write a paragraph of your own, describing a time you were embarrassed by a family member. In the paragraph, use as many capitalization rules as you can. Try to get one of each that is represented above.
