ELL Tip of the week: Comprehensible input • Making adjustments to speech so that the message to the student is understandable is referred to as “comprehensible input” (Krashen, 1985). • HOW? • Enunciate and speak more slowly • Repeat yourself frequently • Use gestures, body language, pictures, and real objects to accompany your words • Provide models of what is expected • Avoid jargon and idiomatic speech as much as possible • Hands-on activities (reducing the linguistic demand on ELLs) • Pre-teach vocabulary so ELLs can comprehend the lesson better 10/31/11 Source: Making Content Comprehensible for ELLs: The SIOP Model
