  2. CAHSEE Essay Writing • On THE CAHSEE, you will only write one essay. It will be one of the following types of writing: • Response to an expository passage • Response to a literary passage • Biographical narrative • Persuasive essay • Business letter • You are being graded on these two things: • How well you can write in English in an organized way. • How well you can answer the topic.

  3. Essay Writing We will practice writing a Bionarrative this week! • You will only write one essay. It will be one of the following types of writing: • Response to an expository passage • Response to a literary passage • Biographical narrative • Persuasive essay • Business letter • You are being graded on these two things: • How well you can write in English in an organized way. • How well you can answer the topic.

  4. Essay writing – what they all have in common. • Each type should be written in a general essay format. • Introduction paragraph with a thesis. • Explain what you are going to talk about. Make sure to clearly state your opinion. • Body paragraphs. • Discuss your ideas in detail. Make sure to include examples. • Conclusion paragraph. • Summarize your ideas and explain why they are important.

Essay writing – Biographical Narrative • Specific Requirements • You will have to pick a person who is important to you or about a person in history. • Describe this person so the reader can “see” him/her • Include sensory details (sight, sound, smell) • Sample Prompt • There are many difficult obstacles people must overcome in their life. Take a moment and think of such a time. Describe the person who helped you during this difficult time. Make sure to provide details about what this person did to help you.

  6. Your prompt In the play Antigone, Antigone defends her belief against the state and Creon, the king. Throughout history, people have had different belief systems than those of society. Write an essay in which you describe an individual who has defended his/her belief system. What was her/his belief? How did he/she defend it? Why? Use details and examples to support your ideas.

You will NOT be able to cite any quotes or paraphrase any of your research. • You will NOT be able to use any notes when you write this essay in class. • This is an in-class Bio narrative prompt, not a research paper.

  10. You will be graded on the CAHSEE 4 pt rubric. • Mr. Lang and Ms. Jackson will be looking closely at your organization and your specific details and examples REMEMBER: Describe this person so the reader can “see” him/her • Include sensory details (sight, sound, smell)
